You might remember when Air Jordans were all the rage (some say they still are!) or everyone had to pause before a game to inflate their pair of Reebok Pumps. There’s definitely a style aspect when sports shoes are considered, but don’t let it distract you from what’s most important: a comfortable fit and helping to prevent injuries!
If you are heading out to look for athletic shoes, then it’s wise to go somewhere that has knowledgeable staff who are trained to look for differences and needs in feet. They can get a good look at your foot shape and your gait, identifying the right type of shoe model to accommodate conditions such as overpronation or supination (i.e. your foot rolling too far one way or another when you plant it).
If you’re on your own, then you need to know your own foot. If you have low arches and your feet tend to roll inward (overpronation), you will want a show with motion-control features and solid support. If an old pair of shoes is worn more on the outside heel and inside of the forefoot, it’s a good sign of overpronation.
If, instead, your shoes wear out on the outside edges and you have high arches, you likely supinate, or roll outward. Look for a more cushioned and soft shoe.
When you find a shoe that fits your foot type, make sure it fits your activity as well. Shoes are designed for different sports to help protect against the forces that sport exerts on the feet. A walking shoe, for example, is less flexible than a running shoe. Using the wrong type for your sport can not only be miserable, but also increase the risk of injury.
