All the student athletes who participate in any of the twelve different seasons currently in-session for Pennsylvania high schools have a couple of things in common. One some parents find to be concerning is the fact they are all at risk for physical injury. There are certainly preventative measures that can be taken to lower the risk, but the fact remains – when humans move our bodies, there’s a possibility for injury to happen.
Given the role feet and ankles play in providing the mobility enabling athletes (of all ages) to play their favorite sports, it stands to reason that lower limb injuries have a particularly high rate of occurrence. Now, the good news is that many of these injuries are effectively treated without needing surgical intervention.
Custom orthotics is a treatment option that may be able to reduce the risk of surgery, even for younger patients!
Some people may have heard that orthotic therapy is something just to be used for adults, but this isn’t the case. Actually, there are instances wherein orthotics are even more beneficial for children than adults. This can be attributed to the fact younger bodies are still developing.
A great example is bunions. Now, there’s a common misconception the condition is caused by women’s shoes, but this simply isn’t the case. Abnormal foot structure or biomechanics lead to the formation of a bunion. The reason we mention this in the context of children and orthotics is because these medical devices can be instrumental in preventing a bunion from worsening. If a son or daughter is showing the early signs of a bunion, contact our practice and request an appointment for the earliest opportunity. Doing so will spare your child a lot of pain over the long run.
Along the same lines, orthotics for flatfoot may sometime be beneficial for children. When prescribed, orthotic therapy started at a younger age can establish a healthy habit—orthotics only work if used on a regular basis, after all—and possibly even contribute to physical development in a more normal fashion (when started early).
Of course, if you ever have any questions regarding your child’s foot development, you can always contact us and we’ll be happy to answer them for you!
